NBC Telemundo 2024 Paris Olympics Virtual Set

Creating 3D stadiums is not the only things we can help clients with. As we found out in early 2024 when NBC Telemundo approached us to help them realise their vision of having their virtual set set on the Place du Tracadero in Paris.

With iconic landmarks available but at a huge cost to broadcasters and Telemundo having a beautiful facility in Miami that could handle the virtual set, they asked us to help create the setting for their set design.

When we started discussing the area that was needing to be created, it was very clear this was not going to be a small job. It was decided that online refernce material is all very well and good, but it just does not compare to getting accurate data yourself.

So a tip to Paris was planned to gather photographs, detailed area plans, measurements and a first first for us, utilising photogrammetry for the many statues that were in place in and around the plaza.

In the end I gathered more photographs than I have ever done with any holiday or project and walked around what would end up being over 450,000 square meters of modelled area. The photogrammetry worked well in capturing lots of details but we still had a lot of work to do in order to make the final statues look good. The technology is a help that’s for sure, but it’s far from a finished process and still means lots of work to clean up and develop the models properly.

“I couldn’t imagine what this was going to be when our team started working on it. It has exceeded everything that I could have imagined. It has been a labor of love, but our team enjoys innovating and being creative.”

Manashi Mukherjee VP, technical production, Telemundo

Making sure the 3D model we created was perfectly set up for the client to take over and work their magic on took time to finesse but then we said goodbye to our model and completed our work on the Olympics and there was still months before the event even started.

When we saw the final output go to air we were elated. The time spent taking all the details down resulted in an amazing 3D environment that any viewer would struggle to differentiate between it and reality. Unreal Engine then added its powerful lighting and suddenly the set took on different looks throughout the long days of broadcast and given the time zone, the latter part of the broadcasts were in front of the Eiffel Tower at night watching the sun set in the distance. It all looked amazing.

A huge thank you to the team at NBC Telemundo for trusting us with this scale of project and we are so proud to see the result look so good for all to see.
